Senior Software Engineer

Hextropian Systems is a Washington-based startup building a category-defining enterprise risk, governance, and compliance platform powered by custom neuro-symbolic AI systems.

Our platform evaluates incoming operational and business events against dozens to thousands of regulations in near real time to detect compliance issues, latent risk, and operational exposure. We work with highly regulated industries, including energy, financial services and banking, pharmaceutical manufacturing, biotechnology, and food production.

We're looking for a senior engineer who is fundamentally a systems thinker, someone who understands the entire stack through real experience, not just familiarity. Specific programming languages are no longer the primary requirement. Runtime architectures are.

This role is for engineers who:

• Move extremely fast while maintaining engineering discipline.
• Are comfortable working with AI-assisted development while taking full ownership of correctness and quality.
• Understand distributed systems, cloud-native deployments, operational safety, and production reliability.
• Can operate effectively in highly parallelized engineering environments.
• Are comfortable owning pieces of the stack while collaborating effectively at component boundaries.
• Are adaptable and willing to use the processes, methodologies, harnesses, and toolchains already in place.
• Care deeply about architecture, metrics, and delivering outcomes that solve real customer problems.

Our stack is built on the BEAM, with Elixir as the primary programming language, running primarily on Kubernetes while also capable of being deployed on virtual machines or bare-metal servers.

We also use Go for selected components and Rust for our proprietary symbolic core. The UI is built with TypeScript and Phoenix LiveView.

Strong preference for candidates with:

• A degree in software engineering, computer science, or a related technical field.
• Experience in machine learning, data science, or data engineering.
• Experience with LLM pre-training, fine-tuning, and in-context learning, including prompt optimization techniques such as GEPA.
• Residency in the greater Seattle area, with willingness to transition to a hybrid office/remote model if and when business needs require it.

This is initially a contract role, with the potential to convert to full-time depending on mutual fit and upcoming fundraising milestones.
